Kulanen Ikyo is a film composer from Nigeria, whose credits include The Cult of Nature Boy (ABC/Hulu), The Black Book and Lionheart (Netflix).
The Black Book reached No. 3 on Netflix’s global film chart, with more than 5.6 million views in its first 48 hours. Lionheart—the first Nigerian film acquired by Netflix—premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the Black Reel Award for Outstanding International Film.
Kulanen’s scores combine high-level cinematic craft with a distinctive African musical perspective; Orchestral scoring, electronic textures, and African rhythmic traditions. Rather than treating African traditions as cultural colour, he allows them to shape his approach to scoring itself, using call-and-response structures and polyrhythms to develop a distinctive musical voice.
His additional credits include Oloture, Blood Sisters, A Sunday Affair, I Do Not Come to You by Chance, The CEO, and October 1, for which he won an Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award.
