James Newberry is an award winning composer and multi-instrumentalist. His approach to scoring to picture and unique voice has allowed him to work on features, documentaries, television series, and films that have reached top-tier festivals around the world (Sundance, Cannes, NYFF, Tribeca, and more). Characterized by an organic, eclectic, and specialized electro-acoustic sound, his music incorporates un-conventional style blends as well as the many exceptional musicians he collaborates with on each project. His approach to music is to take the improvisational nature of a performance and tailor it to fit the need of the project. From the seemingly chaotic to the strictly organized, all of James’ music begins with a touch of improvisation that evolves into its final form.
His recent work includes the documentary feature PIER KIDS, Sundance 2020 short film BUCK, SXSW series WE’RE DOING GOOD, and co-scoring numerous documentary series such as HBO’s THE LADY AND THE DALE, CNN’s LBJ: TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY, and WOLFGANG on Disney+. James also released his debut album, SIGNALS THROUGH THE CRACKS in 2021. He currently resides in LA with his wife Mia and their cute cat Pika.
